Quite often I am faced with this situation where I have to describe
How do you explain our country to such a bunch ... I get scared that if I tell them about the unity in all the diversity their brains might just explode with all the thinking ... gosh, their ignorance is sometimes so irritating - but then when I think again - it just makes me feel so so so good :)
The quickest way that I am able to get "ahhhhh's" out of them is by telling them that India is like "Europe - as a single nation" - that explains the different languages, traditions, cuisines, music, attire etc. etc. pretty quickly.

India described ...
The average Indian
Amidst all this chaos of this last week of the semester ... exams ... reports et all - managed to squeeze in 10 mins to watch the Aishwarya @Oprah show today - I know I'm late - bite me! in fact bite the MBA program :)
have seen Aishwarya on the David Letterman show before ... and this did not seem very different. Now I really don't like Aishwarya Rai ... personally I think she can not act for nuts nor is she the prettiest - but then that’s a topic for another day ...
point I noted with both these shows is that the questions she gets asked are pretty weird - in the sense that the questions are more targeted towards India than towards the person. So Oprah asks her all these questions about Indian women and Indian culture and tradition, what women in India think about sex etc. etc. - That’s when I got to thinking ... is Aishwarya truly a representative for India?
I remember having a lot of conversation with Scott, a good friend of mine in the program, and we would have these long discussions on music, movies, culture ... and somehow I always used to end up telling him that it’s very difficult to define an "average Indian"; or that I really may not represent the average Indian male. How do you define the average Indian?
Is he liberal or conservative? Does he listen to Carnatic or Hindustani or Rock/Pop/Grunge? Is he a racist - a sexist -... opinionated/proud/deep-rooted in his culture? Does the average Indian know the Mahabharata and the Ramayana in detail? Knowledge on
Well to me all these questions are quite personal and also very collective at the same time. The best explanation that I have come up with is that
In that respect I guess it’s really unfair to Aishwarya that she gets asked all these questions in these shows ... what would she say? She definitely is not the "average" Indian - well actors/celebrities in any country are far from "average". Its definitely a huge huge honour to be able to represent your country ... I would love to be in that position - but then I really would not know what to say if I were asked such questions ...

The Bollywood Monster
Have always been thinking - How come there are so many good rock bands from Pakistan who come out with videos and albums and so few Indian bands who do that. OK - Euphoria is one of the best bands I have seen - oh no don't judge them by the desi songs they make - I was at their show last year and man they rocked - they played for more than 3 hours without a break ... my feet were screaming to sit - but they were rocking on without looking tired at all ... they matched the first Parikrama show that I saw at IIT - those days when rock shows in Bombay were not shut down at 11pm!!
but then I digress ...
Was reading this interview with Pentagram and Vishal mentioned the problem that Indian rock bands have - they are constantly overshadowed by this huge huge monster of Bollywood - it’s difficult to find a large population who in interested in rock music - along with Hindi fillum music or in lieu of. I know that sounds like an excuse on some level but I think it is true. Its almost like trying to sell grunge or punk-rock in the country states in the US.
Each time I think of Parikrama, I can not help but sigh ... such immense talent and no albums yet ... and then there are bands like "Orange Street" the Delhi band which rocked Mood-I 1996 or 1997 ... and if I am in a memory trip spree then I guess I have to mention Chakravyuh - man that was some band - sadly broke up quickly - tho Dhruv still continues to make some solid jingles type music - then there was Indus Creed - quite a good mix of desi rock - immense talent ... last I heard benegal is in NY singing for Broadways!
Bollywood does take a heavy toll of the Indian alternate music scene - I remember I could not find Shakti albums @Rhythm house - but there was Daler Mehndi all over the place - no disrespect to the DM man - but still ... that was unfair - it was easier to get access to Indian bands' recordings in the US than it was in India!
Roy Venkatraman, Karl Peters, Prasanna, Louis Banks, Ranjit Barot ... all drowned by the Bollywood monster :(

Batli Chirandi
I have to talk mention this - my wife claims that they played this game when they were kids - can you believe it - a game called "Batli Chirandi" :P
its true - I just confirmed it with her brother - they actually went around shouting "batli chirandi"!
something with coconuts and circles and hide and seek! what can I say.
amusing? can't imagine 15 kids running towards a circle screaming "batli chirandi" - wouldn't know what to do if such a thing happened - roll over laughing or run away scared and screaming!
had to share this experience - never mind the exams and the late hour of the night.
and oh yes - i said "kopchi chirandi" once by mistake and you should have seen the profound expressions I got for the unsophisticated name I gave the game! make no mistake - its "batli chirandi"!

New Music
Have been listening to some good desi music in the last few weeks. Both bands are pakistani bands. The first one is Fuzon - about which I have spoken before on other forums - if you haven't yet heard them then you really must - their album Saagar is more than worth the investment of a couple of hundred rupees.
The second band is E.P. - a pakistani rock band - they are really really good - am listening to their first album Irtiqa - which was released in 2003!!! unlike Fuzon they are quite hard - and they have very neat site http://www.entityparadigm.com/ep.html
do check it out when you have the time. They are a good mix of hard rock, rock-rap and some pop-rock-grunge! And the website has a video of a live drumming recording by one of their drummers - yes they have two drummers - very neat stuff.
And yes - for those who like fusion music - there's this chembur band called "The Fusion Band" which has an album called OM - very neat. For their first album they definitely impress.
Which reminds me one more thing - Pentagram is releasing their third album sometime this year - should be interesting - am still kicking myself for not having bought the CD for "Up" - their second album - the tape doesn't do too much justice to their new sound.
well - thats all for today - yes I know - its been a looooooooooooooong hiatus
but well - I have been doing so much writing in the past few days ( 4 reports and 2 homeworks due this week) that I thot what the heck ... will post a blog as well :)
had to recover my password to get access to my own blogsite - heh heh

Each time I shake my head at them wannabe investment bankers who are ready to write off 8 years of their life so that they can make boatloads of money after that - I keep reminding myself that there is someone out there looking at me and shaking his head! who am I to have the "holier than thou" attitude?
I may not center my life around "money" , but then I'm the one who wants to travel all around the world, buy nice musical instruments, have fast computers, nice house, nice car, travel into space if possible ... I have a list too!
Well we could only begin to justify our actions, needs, wants ... and never end!

Yuva - Comment to Brij's Blog?
me wanted to write a blog on Yuva but I guess that shall take a while ;)
this is wayyyyyyyy faster ;)
abt Yuva - well I thot it was a wonderful movie - me being a big Mani Ratnam fan - I maybe biased but I think this time he delivered ... and in style.
Abhishek - well first movie I have seen of his and am I impressed or what! Very fine actor - overacts a lil sometimes but he's very good.
Devgun - well he's up there! needs no more mention! Am convinced that Kajol gave him a sound beating and solid acting classes after marriage! No more riding two bikes at the same time for this chap ;) 2 good.
Vivek - Company, Masti and this - very impressive - fine actor - honest expressions - and I really liked the character :) Mani Ratnam gives his character the Karthik of Mouna Raagam feel and he caries it off very well. Loved the one-liners between him and Kareena - would have to see if Hum-Tum betters that ;)
the ladies - none of them had a chunky role but ... Rani is very good but I don't think she did anything out of the ordinary - did what was expected of her.
I think Mani Ratnam made Kareena look reaaaaaaaaaaaly good :) - the waves on her in "Hey ...Khuda Hafiz" - too much only.
I begin to wonder if Mani Ratnam even dictates the colors and types of clothes that ppl wear - I'm kinda certain abt that. Kareena for one looked real cool as opposed to her revolting self in other moveez :P
Hema Jr. was cute :) her expressions - that too in the slow motion - said a lot!
Mani Ratnam - man I could go on and on about the way he's made the movie! Every shot is so crisp. There's always a bright red and yellow or or a Blue and green or a white and Red combination - his colors are soooooooooo vivid! now some wud say its the cinematographer but after having seen soooooooo many Ratnam movies - I think the director deserves a lot of the credit.
Love the way he makes movies ... cut to the scene where Devgun takes a turn and the entire backdrop is covered with this big red scorpio turning behind him - the scorpio could have been white or black - but no it was and had to be RED - what an effect!
every shot has to have a mammoth backdrop, be it the Howrah bridge when Rani and Abhishek are talking by the window or the big green mountains when Devgun is talking to the villagers - quite impressive and very very worth a dekko on the big screen.
And the Howrah bridge thingie in the end was really cool - he pulled it off very well - One could easily have gotten carried away while shooting such scenes (watch any recent Kamal Haasan movie to understand) - but Mr. Ratnam keeps it tight. Just when I thot the fight was stretching a bit it got over :)
The only disappointment was the way the song "Fanaa" was shot. I've been glued to the Yuva sndtrk for about 2 months now and I expected a lot out of that song - something like a "Tanhaaye" from DCH - but the disc thing with some freak singing the song was a dampener. And the songs in the 2nd half could have been a lil shorter - but then thats my opinion :)
The movie was a tad violent but then I think the artistry and the strong characterisation compensates nicely for the gore. You dont come out with a "bloody" feeling and thats what matters.
All in all a very good movie I thot. would like to rent the DVD and watch it a second time to have a better perspective ;)
and I think this is too long for a comment so I shall put it in my blog!

Fast Cars ...and Good Cars!
I've been thinking ... ya i know not many times that happens but then ... what the heck ;)
in the last 3 years I have had the chance to drive more than 20 different cars - Mustang, Eclipse, Corolla, Camry, cavalier, Explorer, Optima, Sentra, Altima and many others - no I have not become a chauffeur - just that I have had the chance to stay in the US and rent out many different cars.
And then last week I got a chance to sit in a 2004 M3 - yep BMW and all!
It was not a first time BMW experience - I have been a co-passenger in a BMW 328 iS for long enough to safely say that I have driven it for all practical purposes!
Am I trying to make a point? yep ...
I love the BMW - i still do - great car - especially the sport versions like the 328iS and the M3 - I can't imagine how it would feel to ride these machines, let alone take a sharp turn at 70mph! I used to think (not that I don't now) that one day I too shall own a BMW - no matter the price! and then of course drive down route 1 as fast as I can ... and of course I shall sport a couple of tickets too - but then ... what the heck ;)
But then ... the whole BMW experience is not doing too good with me.
Lets start -
Check out the car - probaby the best looking sedan-class car - goto the BMW site and they even have movies featuring the car - A m a z i n g stuff!
click on the buy links (for an M3 cope) - woah - a host of features
V6 3.2 litre, 333 HP, alloy wheels, Power Glass Moon Roof, Leather Seat Trim, Driver's Seat & O/S Mirrors Memory System, Dual 8-Way Power Seat Adjusters & BMW Assist Communication System, Harman Kardon Radio System, Seat Adjuster, 4-Way Lumbar Support and what not
I'm floored - worth the USD49000 (California, before tax) that you would be shelling out. Of course you're buying the best there is (sedan class of course) and why not. Now the Harman Kardon may not be the best for cars but then definitely good stuff - can't deny that. wow.
But wait - here's where the rug got yanked (rather hard) from under my feet - All the wonderful things that you see above (except the first 3) are OPTIONAL features! In other words, you gotto pay extra!!
Now wait a minute - are you saying that a BMW does not even come with a Harman Kardon - please ... - Heck whats this guy cribbing about the radio - jesus its just a radio - yep I can hear you out there and maybe you are right - its a car-deck after all - but for someone like me - who drove more than 18000 miles in his first 10 months in the US - I think that is one of the most important things that you need when you drive - and it better be good.
Besides on long drives, I want a smooth ride - I could live with a non-sporty (read softer) suspension - I bet less than 1000 miles out of my 18000 were spent in fast turns - so I'm reeeeeally fine with the "softer" suspensions! A sports car is for sports - not for looooooooooong drives - imagine riding an F1 car for 10 hours flat :P
Of course the ride on a BMW - or any other sports car is not that hard - its pretty comfortable - but word to the wise - you most definitely can "feel" a rough road unlike some other cars I know - unless of course you're used to sleeping in BEST and local trains :)
USD65000 with all accessories - now thats what the car costs with all the accessories - not bad - still cheaper than a Porshe one wud say ... but then - the car does a mere 16 miles per gallon!!! Hellllooooooooo...
333 HorsePower is a real cool thing to think about - but not really when you're going to be driving quite often to the gas station! Heck thats nearly as bad as the US Cars!
I look around and I remember the Acura 3.2TL - with all the features that we spoke of above PLUS a Bose 10CD changer system PLUS an in-dash GPS - yep all for USD34000 - and its got power yes 270 HP - looks ... well it does not look as good as the Beamer but then hell - I can put in another 5K - get new struts and lower the car and lo it looks better ;)
The only problem I ahve with all the other cars is that they seem to be "growing" year after year ... which is somehing I really dont like - "biiiiig cars" - and something I love about the 3 Series - but lo one look at the new Beamers and they're ugly (matter of opinion of course) - they too have taken the American route - cars getting bigger by the year!!!
Hard-core Beamer fans (including myself) keep trying to console ourselves that the new Beamers would slowly "grow on" everyone ... but I dropped out of that gropup long ago ... if something hits you the first time - it must be really good - and it will keep hitting you - I realy dont see much of that around anymore :(
This "growing on you" thing is only for things that are just half-way there or even less - its just like the stoopid song on the radio that you find yourself humming one-day ... after you've been pomelled with it!!
But then we live in a branded world ... so who's to say.
Someone asked me - if you had a million bucks and ahd to buy a car ... wouldnt you buy an M3?!!?

Hap Hap Happy Anniversary to Us
Here's wishing ourselves on our third anniversary - its been such a wonderful three years. The only spoiler is that I couldn't be with my D on the day - so without my D it just was like another day - yep - we sure are going to celebrate our anniversary when I return :)
I just hope this doesnt become a habit ;) - in the sense we've been together on this day twice in the last four years - of course the first being the day we got married :D
hmmmmm - its been a wonnnnnderful journey albeit the geographical distance separating us as I write this today :)

I just hope this doesnt become a habit ;) - in the sense we've been together on this day twice in the last four years - of course the first being the day we got married :D

ta da ...
Well what do I know ... I'm actually doing this
well I've been thinking for a while as to what I would write about - never could figure that one out (even now)
music? cars? electronics? nature? movies? comics? games? science? Indian government? ... well some of the things I talk about ... or rather of which I have an opinion about ... and that’s only the tip of the iceberg ;) he heh
n eways thanks to the internet - geography is dead and it hardly matters that I write this half way across the world from home!
I want to say I'm listening to music, but I am not :( but then the music never stops in my head so I "am" listening to DMB - "dancing nancies" - live at the Central Park - you really should pick that album - 3 CD's and the end of it - you wish that there was more! And its more fun listening to it when you're driving ... alone ... on winding roads - ahhh... I want to say on a Mitsubishi Eclipse with the moon-roof pulled back on Route 1 California - near 450 degree turns on greeeeeen roads - clouds hanging low and the air smelling sweet - ahh - but then I was listening to Karsh Kale - ahhhh - Karsh Kale - well I could go on and on ... save it for another day :)
Surprisingly, this time around I still havent played any games on the X-box (its been 5 days since I have been ion clooooooose proximity to one!) - can’t really figure out why. And I still haven't finished the Knightfall-KnightsEnd series ... it still lies on my laptop ... waiting ... watching ... oh yes and quickly need to buy that 7-pin S-Video to RCA connector to connect my laptop to the 27" TV, so that I can watch the movies on my hard disk!
